HYPERDOCS - teachers way of saying DITCH THE BORING BOOKS!

Right - Ditch those boring books! (I can hear people in the back BOOING! ... SECURITY! SECURITY! give those people their coffee! They're grouchy!)

Hey if they get rid of all those books maybe that money can be allocated in our teacher pockets!!! Amirite?

DREAMS! LOL! we all know they'll probably add more jean days!

 Good day,

On this episode of "teachers travelers of the multiverse". We ventured on the magical world of Hyperdocs!

That picture is not even remotely related to what we are going to be learning about today.

Hyperdocs!

Many of you are already familiar with the hyperlink word, is a link or connection that has hyperactivity. In other words you can click the word and link yourself to another page or place in the internets.

What hyperdocs have done with them is put them on steroids. Teachers/Educators have come up with a nicely explainable method of teaching using them.

Before we begin you can start here! Let's Engage by watching the following two videos that quickly explain what are hyperdocs!

So, let's clarify somethings here.
What do hyperdocs allow the students to do?
  1. Collaborate (and listen... Ice ice baby!)
  2. Think critically
  3. Combine information from multiple sources
  4. create through technology
If you are an educator your are pretty familiar with the content of the hyperdocs which looks as follow.

  1. Engage
  2. Explore
  3. Explain
  4. Apply
  5. Share
  6. Extend
And guess what! You can attack that close teacher/student connection while they are working. Nurture that relationship with the student as you critically analyze what is up! By that I mean, look at their needs and have conversations, meaningful and constructive or if you are like me, joke around! Laughter is a great social glue!

Ok- so who came up with that term (got to give credit where credit is due)

Lisa Highfill, Kelly Hilton, and Sarah Landis! Thank you Ladies!

What's a hyperdoc and what it isn't.

It is

It isn’t

Allows collaboration

A place to click a hyperlink to get to another page only

Something gets created

No opportunity to create within the doc

Allows for reflection on learning, and engage in the processes for application

Just to consume information

Connect with other subject eras, and real world

No explicit connections, may provide links to games or activities.

Here is the link to this document if you can't read it and would like to make a copy.

Ma' Take away!

To tell you all the truth, hyperdocs is a real eye opener.  It is well explained and easy to follow.  As a matter of fact I've used every element involved in them but they were all scattered. Now, there is an actual guideline and easy to follow steps that allow me as a teacher to create engaging and extendable lessons. Hyperdocs is related to the term "ditch the textbook" and it is for many reasons. You can scatter the text and allow the student to explore the information, create background knowledge and you as a teacher become the one that helps them synthesize it by creating this design that allows for them to expand on their own.

Hyperdocs is also a way for me to create my teaching environment and share it with my students. This allows me to be able to create full ecosystems inside my classrooms and have control over the safety of my students privacy as they venture into the internet.

You as a teacher select, position, and curate the information to allow the student to be able to learn freely while freeing you from the boring and antiquated traditional direct teaching.  Hyperdocs purpose is to free you as teacher so you can connect with the students and nurture that teacher, student environment.

One last thing, once you have a clear understanding of the potential hyperdocs have and also control, you can play with it and adapt it to your student needs keeping in mind the non-negotiable included content stated before.

Thanks again for dropping by and I hope this information becomes handy and useful for y'all.

See you all later, and thanks for all the fish!
