week 1 Vanity Search - google myself....

Vanity search -

I had to check my presence online by conducting an online search of myself.  The task was simple, google yourself adding quotations to your name and see the  results then note them.  The best part is that I know I have the same name as a "bachatero" artist from Dominican republic so I know that this artists was going to pop up immediately along with everything that involves him. Spotify, record company.. etc etc....

The more I dug , I also found that someone with my name was incarcerated for 16 years (wrongful conviction). Yet, there still nothing about me.  Which in a way is good. "Luis Vargas"

As I kept changing now adding "Luis G Vargas" middle name initial. Nothing yet

"Luis Gerardo Vargas" nothing yet.

I added "Luis Gerardo Vargas Estrada" which is my full name and that found my old facebook page.

I think I did a great job not exposing myself too much on the internet with my name.  I was always very protective of it even when signing up to new services, if they allowed me to stay anonymous I would use that instead.

Now lets get technical: When I looked up my name with McAllen Texas which is the city where I'm from they found my old LinkedIn account with a business I used to own.

This search also linked me to where I live right now and the previous three places along with relatives. Alright this one is quite scary.  It took me to white pages and pages where if you pay you can see their full record.

I've done a pretty good job at keeping my information limited to what I want to expose.

This vanity search has helped me realize the implications of information divulged into the web and the reasons for control over it.

This is it for me and my vanity search! I think I've done a pretty good job at keeping my human life separated from my online presence so far and as a teacher I would like to keep it that way.
